Phone service still out to 2,500 in Campbell after line cut

CAMPBELL

Land telephone lines were still dead for 2,500 customers here, including the police and fire departments and the rest of city hall, by late afternoon today.

The city’s phone company, Delta Telecom of Poland, believes someone digging on Wilson Avenue destroyed an underground line, city officials say. They did not know who did the digging.

Phone service went out around 9 p.m. Wednesday and crews worked to locate the break today.

The police, fire and water departments’ main numbers were all rerouted through cell phones and those departments were able to receive calls, city officials said today. The street department’s main number was working.

Anyone who needs 911 can dial it as usual, and Mahoning County’s dispatch center will radio calls to the city police.

Crews were working on Wilson Avenue in the vicinity of Madison and then Robinson late this afternoon. City officials said the phone company believes service could be restored tonight or by Friday.
