1893: The 19th president of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes, dies in Fremont, Ohio, at age 70.

Hawaii’s monarchy is overthrown as a group of businessmen and sugar planters force Queen Lili’uokalani to abdicate.

1917: The United States pays Denmark $25 million for the Virgin Islands.

1929: The cartoon character Popeye the Sailor makes his debut in the “Thimble Theatre” comic strip.

1961: President Dwight D. Eisenhower delivers his farewell address in which he warns against “the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.”

1994: A 6.7 magnitude earthquake strikes Southern California, killing at least 72 people.

1995: More than 6,000 people are killed when an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 devastates the city of Kobe, Japan.

1987: A 22-year-old New Orleans man is arrested in the death of Patricia Lobaugh, 42, of Bristolville, who was shot during an apparent robbery while visiting New Orleans.

Jennie Dalessandro is elected president of the Youngstown Board of Education by a vote of 5-2, with board members Socrates Kolitsos and Edna Pincham casting their votes for Mrs. Pincham.

1972: Three Kimmel Brook area men are arrested in the shooting and robbery of Rex Risner, 72-year-old operator of Grace’s Hillbilly Tavern on Albert Street.

Louie DeLuca, operator of the Backstage Bar in downtown Youngstown says a dynamite bomb left on the bar steps was planted by “several long-haired undesirables” he had caught earlier in the bar bathroom with illegal drugs.

1962: The Youngstown Board of Education moves to create a new position of assistant superintendent for business affairs.

Mahoning County commissioner Edward J. Gilronan and Welfare Director Isadore L. Feuer say they believe employees at the County Home for the Aged are Welfare Department employees, which means the state should pay half their salaries, about $90.000.

1937: John Tod is re-elected president of the Youngstown Hospital Association and Mrs. M.I. Arms is re-elected president of the Women’s Board.

Two bandits kidnap Mike Jaffee, 27, a driver for Ward Bakery, rob him of his automobile and about $80 from his day’s receipts and dump him a mile south of Fowler Center in Trumbull County.
