Prominent Cleveland lawyer gets prison term for tax evasion

YOUNGSTOWN — Atty. Leslie W. Jacobs, a prominent Cleveland lawyer and former president of the Ohio State Bar Association, has been sentenced to a year and one day in federal prison for evading $75,385 in taxes by filing false federal income tax returns.

The sentence will be folowed by a year of supervised release, the first four months of which is to be on electronically monitored house arrest. He must pay a $10,000 fine, and he will self-report to prison.

U.S. District Judge Benita Y. Pearson imposed the sentence today on Jacobs, 67, a Harvard Law School graduate, who had earlier pleaded guilty to filing false personal federal income tax returns for 2004 through 2007.

Jacobs delivered a $75,385 restitution check to the IRS at his sentencing.
