A nature retreat, “Winter Wisdom,” is set for 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 5 at Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center. Frank Romeo, director emeritus of the Villa Farm, will reflect on nature in the winter, and participants will share experiences. He is director of the Lawrence County Conservation District.

Grant for ramp

State Rep. Sean J. O’Brien of Brookfield, D-65th, announced that the state will spend $472,628 for a Mosquito Lake State Park Ramp improvement at state Route 88 in Mecca Township.

“This state grant is an important step toward improving public access to our natural resources,” said O’Brien. “Mosquito Lake State Park serves as an important economic tool by encouraging tourism and additional recreational choices that can improve the overall well-being and health for our family, friends, and neighbors.”

The project will rehabilitate an existing concrete boat ramp, construct a new breakwater to protect the ramp from waves and provide 240 square feet of new floating docks. The work is scheduled for completion by June.

Valentine campaign

Friendly’s has launched its 31st annual Cones for Kids campaign. The Valentine’s Day fundraiser runs through Feb. 13.

For a $1 donation, Friendly’s provides restaurant guests with five Valentine’s Day cards, redeemable for free Friendly’s Kids Cones.

Proceeds will benefit 30 Easter Seals Camp Friendly’s programs aimed at building a sense of independence and accomplishment for children. The campaign has raised more than $27 million to date including more than $675,000 in 2011.
