NEW SPRINGFIELD

For years, Springfield police have relied on other agencies when a police dog is needed.

Chief Matthew Mohn wants to change that, and he’s asking the public for help.

“We’ve never had a canine. It’s something I’ve always wanted to implement, especially now with the growth of nursing homes and an increase in illegal drug activity,” Mohn said.

The Springfield police dog will be dual-trained to track people, such as an elderly person who gets lost or a fleeing suspect, and to find drugs, Mohn said.

The dog costs $12,750, and the price of training, dog supplies and veterinary bills will add a few thousand more to that, the chief said.

After applying for several grants and being turned down, Mohn said he wanted to reach out to residents. The department began collecting donations about a month ago, and Mohn said the response has been “excellent.”

Those who would like to donate can send a check payable to “Springfield Township Police” and mail it to officer Glenn Corey, who will be the dog handler, at the police department, 3475 East South Range Road, New Springfield, OH 44443.

People also can purchase a $10 ticket for a Feb. 8 raffle for a half side of beef. Guterba Farms donated the beef, and Chamberlain Farms is donating its processing service. Tickets are available at the police department, and proceeds will go to the police-dog fund.

Private donations have aided other departments’ police-dog units.

In Boardman, police dogs Eros and Sumo were funded through private donations and fundraisers, said township Administrator Jason Loree.

Boardman recently was considered for a grant for a third police dog, so that a dog would be available on each shift, but did not receive it, he said.

“We’re still looking for opportunities to bring a third dog on. With our additional officers coming on board because of the police levy, the chief would love to have the money to have a third unit,” Loree said.

He said a canine unit is versatile and helps deter and solve crimes.
