Canton dismisses 29 workers

Officials in Canton say 29 city employees who submitted retirement papers but continued working without being properly rehired lost their jobs this week.

The public-service director declined to identify the workers for The Repository newspaper because of an FBI investigation that’s ongoing.

Director Warren Price says the workers submitted retirement papers between 2002 and 2011 and started collecting pensions, sometimes without informing their bosses.

State law allows for the so-called “double-dipping” when public employees retire and are rehired. But Price says the 29 workers were not officially rehired, and their paperwork wasn’t signed by the right supervisors.
