The activities planned in the Mahoning Valley for the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday as submitted to The Vindicator:

MAHONING

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Planning Committee of Mahoning County: A community worship service is scheduled at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St. Featured speaker will be Pastor Michael McBride of The Way Christian Center, West Berkeley, Calif. Pastor McBride, who has been in ministry for 20 years, also serves as executive director of Berkeley Organizing Congregations for Action, an affiliate of the national network of People Improving Communities through Organizing. The service also will include music by the Emancipation Community Choir directed by Dr. Luke Shumpert and Scripture readings by representatives of Christian, Islam and Jewish faiths. The theme for the service and community workshop is “Responding with King’s Passion in the Fight Against Poverty.”

The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown, with Dr. Joseph Mosca, dean of Youngstown State University’s Bitonte College of Health and Human Services, speaking on the use and misuse of statistics on poverty. Pastor McBride also will speak. Workshop participants will break into small groups to focus on how the Valley responds to poverty from social/human services and social justice. Those attending are asked to bring nonperishable food items or cash donations for Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. The service and workshop are free. The Rev. Dr. Lewis W. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6488 and Ladies Auxiliary, 2065 Coitsville-Hubbard Road, Youngstown: Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. luncheon is planned at 1 p.m. Monday. The event is open to the public, and no reservations are required. Keynote speaker will be the Rev. David Moncrief, pastor of Triedstone Baptist Church in Youngstown. Recipient of the Trailblazer Award will be retired Detective Sgt. Delphine Baldwin-Casey of the Youngstown Police Department, who served 31 years in law enforcement. Baldwin-Casey was the first front-line female supervisor and first female commander of a unit, YPD’s Crisis Intervention Unit. Herman Adams is chairman and Earl McAlway and Katherine Williams, co-chairmen.

Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown: A free lunch-and-learn program, “Black, Blue and White,” is planned from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday. Or Bass, Israeli emissary, will lead a discussion on the relationship between African nations and Israel. A light lunch will be served. For information, call 330-746-3251, ext. 159.

TRUMBULL

Trumbull County Chapter of the A. Philip Randolph Institute: Annual salute is planned at 3 p.m. today at DiVieste Banquet Hall, 754 N. River Road NW, Warren, featuring keynote speaker Dr. Bruce W. Thomas, superintendent of Warren City Schools. The luncheon theme is “Building Character Through Education.” The League of Women Voters will receive the annual community- service award for outstanding commitment to the Trumbull County community. The chapter also will play tribute to the U.S. Postal Service. A special award will be presented to Joe Louis Jackson, a member of Second Baptist Church since 1967 and leader in Boy Scouts of America for 44 years. Cost is $25 for adults and $15, children. The Trumbull County Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance will have a Martin Luther King Jr. service at 6 p.m. Sunday at Second Baptist Church, 1510 Main Ave., Warren.

At 7:30 a.m. Monday, YWCA of Warren, 375 North Park Ave., Warren, MLK Day breakfast featuring speaker Judge Robert A. Douglas Jr. of Youngstown Municipal Court. Cost is $15 per person. Call 330-719-5734 for reservations.

PENNSYLVANIA

Coalition for Peace in the Middle East, Students for Justice for Palestine, Adalah: A protest will be Monday with a march starting at 11 a.m. at the Jamestown, Pa., post office to Combined Systems Inc., 388 Kinsman Road, Jamestown, where picketing will take place. CSI is a major supplier of tear gas that is used against protesters.
