One dead in Warren

Warren

Police are investigating a shooting Thursday on the city’s south side that killed one man and sent another to the hospital.

The victims were inside a van at the intersection of Hayes Avenue and Third Street around 8 p.m. when a gunman opened fire on the vehicle, police said.

One man jumped from the vehicle after being shot and was found dead by police near the intersection. Police are unsure if the bullet or the impact from jumping out of the vehicle killed him.

The driver, also wounded, drove to a gas station and called police.

From there, he was taken to St. Joseph Health Center, which was not releasing his condition Thursday night.

Police are not releasing the victims’ names. They do not yet know where the gunshot came from and have no suspects.

Infante to serve on board of elections

WARREN

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted has confirmed the appointment of Niles Mayor Ralph Infante, a Democrat, to a seat on the Trumbull County Board of Elections. The appointment was effective last Friday.

Infante gave up the seat Jan. 31, 2011, to run for re-election as Niles mayor. Sandra Stabile Harwood assumed the seat from March 2011 until Dec. 15 until her candidacy for Trumbull County Family Court judge was certified.

The term Infante is filling expires Feb. 29, so the Trumbull County Democratic Central Committee will meet soon to nominate someone to fill the position for another four-year term beginning March 1, said Kelly Pallante, elections board director.

The seat held by Republican Craig Bonar will expire Feb. 29 also.
