BGMS boys beat Liberty
Boardman Glenwood’s eighth-grade boys basketball team recently defeated Liberty 44-17. Tim Captain led the Spartans offensive attack with 15 points, while Preston Stitt added 11. The BGMS defense limited Liberty to six points in the entire first half.
The seventh-grade team beat Liberty 49-21. Leading the way for the Spartans were Travis Koontz, Bryce Richey and Gavin Strines who each scored eight points. Nick Stamp had six points, while Anthony Davanzo and Sean Augustine each had four points.
Also scoring for the Spartans were J.R. Ryan with three, Mark Smaldino, Dante Colaluca and A.J. Scissum all with two points each.
BGMS girls top liberty
The eighth-grade girls basketball team defeated Liberty 36-13. Strong defense held the Leopards to only four second-half points. Krista Johnson had 22 points and nine steals for Glenwood. Marissa Hanna and Katie Platt added six points each.
The seventh-grade team beat Liberty 27-4. Leading scorers were Taylor Halowell with 10 points, Lauren Pavlansky with seven, Alaina Hufnagel with four. Other scorers for Boardman were Callyn Campana, Aniyuh Spann and Alexis Stutz with two points a piece.
Solid defense from Charlotte Voytko, Emily Wagner and Maryssa Wagner contributed to the win.
Glenwood grapplers show improvement
The Glenwood wrestlers showed major improvement since their last tournament as they finished sixth out of 16 teams at the AMS invitational this past weekend.
The Spartans won three matches and lost two. The team lost to Southeast 66-24 and to Solon 43-42. Glenwood beat Salem (72-18), Hubbard (66-30) and Hickory (51-34).
Despite the two losses, the team wrestled its best all season. Winning matches were Brandon Wallace, Matt Maroni, Conner Kochansky, Chris Dailey, David Dutko, Cole Pollak, Nick Patoray, Sam Varga, AJ Pantaleo, Tyler Dempsey, Tyler Stolar, Zach Hodges, Jared Hoover, Brandon Alm, Anton Finch and Seth Golden.
Alex Birchfield won all five of his matches, three by pin. Danny Boerio won all five matches by pin. Glenwood will compete at the Columbiana Clipper Challenge Jan. 21.
