For local kids, the time between Christmas and New Year’s means no school and plenty of free time. But that doesn’t mean learning has to stop.
To provide local children with a learning experience during their time off, the Boardman library hosted its “School’s Out” story time on Dec. 28.
Librarian Karen Saunders had guests’ imaginations running wild with a Pictionary-type game based on Herve Tullet’s “The Book with a Hole.” Guests approached a chalkboard and had to draw a photo from the book.
Saunders applauded the artistic skills of her guests as they drew photos, joking that her drawing skills make her pictures a little harder to understand.
Afterward, Saunders played melodies on a keyboard and guests played a version of “Name that Tune.”
“Music is a great literacy tool because it helps break down words and makes them easier to understand,” Saunders advised during the game.
The guests then completed parachute games and a bit of literary bingo, with spots on the board being famous children’s books.
Saunders referred to her event of games, music and bingo as a beach party. On a rainy Dec. 28, Saunders said the event was a welcome escape.
“I think there is no better day to have an indoor beach party,” she said with a smile.
