ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital is renovating and updating its eighth-floor orthopedic unit with work expected to be completed this summer.

During the construction phase, orthopedic patients will be moved to another floor, hospital officials said.

The project is the first phase of the hospital’s master facility plan to modernize with a more-effective design and to enhance the level of care, service and convenience for patients, officials said.

The project got under way Monday with a ceremonial wall-breaking attended by hospital staff, physicians and administrators including Dr. Kenneth Jones, orthopedic service line chairman; Dr. Morris Pulliam, TMH medical staff president; Julia Ballas, RN, orthopedic navigator; and several members of the orthopedic team.

A certified orthopedic navigator oversees patients’ surgical experiences from pre-surgery education through rehabilitation.

The hospital’s orthopedic team has surgeons experienced with advanced techniques and technology who use minimally invasive and MRI-guided surgery, gender-specific and customized joint replacements, kyphoplasty and other advanced treatment options. In 2010, TMH earned the 2010 Blue Distinction Award for hip and knee replacement, said Bob Wolleben, TMH chief executive officer.

“Construction of the new floor carries on the legacy of caring that TMH has upheld for more than a century,” Wolleben said. “It demonstrates our ongoing commitment to invest in the future and advance health care in our community.”

The redesigned orthopedic floor and nursing unit will have 19 private orthopedic suites with walk-in showers; an expanded physical therapy and occupational therapy area; a kitchen and tub model; and a redesigned nurse station, hospital officials said.

Other ValleyCare Health System of Ohio facilities include Northside Medical Center in Youngstown and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital in Howland.
