Girard wrestlers tie for title

Girard and Waterloo scored 132 points each to tie for the championship of the Johnny’s Excavating wrestling tournament at Jackson-Milton High School on Saturday.

Garrettsville Garfield finished a close third with 130.5 points, followed by Cardinal (127.5) and Liberty (109.5) to round out the top five.

Girard senior Jacob Carpenter was named co-MVP of the tournament. He won the 138-pound championship with a 7-5 decision over J.J. Diven of Waterloo in the title match.

Carpenter shared the award with Garrettsville’s Aaron Yonker, who won the 160-pound championship with a 9-2 decision over Max Brookes of South Range.

Garrettsville junior Kevin Stock won four matches, all by pin, in a combined time of 2 minutes, 16 seconds.

Also for Girard, Dan Johntony (132) and Matt Deal (152) also won individual championships, while Zane Chase (113) and Ryan Leasure (152) were runners-up.

Garrett Bass (126) finished third and Nick Cardiero (145) was fourth.

Scott Lodge of Salem won the 145 championshup and James Briceland was second at 120, while Stoem Haueter (132), Austin Noel (160) and Eli Bricker (170) took thirds and Jesse Slocum (152) was fourth.

Fred Clark (285) won a championship for Liberty, while Seth Barns (120) and Ty Banks (152) were both third, and Tyrell Jethrow (160) and C.J. Edmonds (182) finished fourth.

Colton Schuster of South Range won the 195 title, while Brookes was second at 160 and Robby Grahovac was fourth at 170.

Jackson-Milton’s team was divided into Blue and White. For J-M Blue, Mitch Tikkanen was runner-up at 106, Nick Armstrong was third at 113 and Tyler Jeffries was fourth at 132.

J-M White’s placers were Tyler Staton, second at 132, Mickey Tromboli, fourth at 106, and Devin Seka, fourth at 113.

Wellsville was represented on the podium by Joe Dowling, third at 138, and Seth Bloor, second at 220, while Crestview’s Jeff Sayer was second at 145, Matt Hardenbrook was second at 170, Craig Lower was third at 182 and Dimitri Gregory was fourth at 195. United’s Charlie Smith was fourth at 285.
