Program to bring Civil War spy to life

Staff report

WARREN

The Sutliff Museum Civil War 150 Committee will present a program on famous Civil War Confederate spy Belle Boyd at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Thomas Meeting Room of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library.

The program is free and open to the public.

As a teenager, Boyd rode through battlefields to deliver secret messages for Gen. Stonewall Jackson. She worked with the Confederate Secret Service, shot and killed a Union soldier, was imprisoned more than once, was sent to England as a diplomatic courier and was captured aboard a blockade-runner.

The first-person interpretation of Belle Boyd will be presented by visiting lecturer Susan Thomas, who has spent eight years portraying this fascinating historical character.

She will portray Boyd as a mature woman who is reminiscing about the “glory days” of her youth.

The Civil War 150 Committee presents several programs a year in commemoration of the Civil War.

The next event will be a commemoration of the Battle of Shiloh on April 21 in the main concourse of Eastwood Mall in Niles.
