Ohio woman sentenced to 14 years for abusing child

A judge has sentenced a woman to 14 years in prison for beating and nearly starving to death a 4-year-old girl who weighed 21 pounds.

A judge in Cincinnati imposed the sentence Thursday on 33-year-old Shanna Mitchell, the child’s guardian, after Mitchell pleaded guilty to felonious assault and two counts of child endangering.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that prosecutors say Mitchell beat and tortured the child over years while her six biological children were well-fed with no injuries. Mitchell had a seventh child after her arrest.

The judge said he gave Mitchell 14 years because that was one year less than the mandatory sentence for a murder conviction.
