Mahoning leaders create sewer post
HILLSVILLE, Pa.
Mahoning Township supervisors created a full-time position of sewer-plant employee and named Supervisor Vito Yeropoli to fill it when they met Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Mahoning Township auditors met and set the salary for the position at $38,000 with no benefits. By law, auditors must set salaries for supervisors employed by the township. Auditor Matt Patton said auditors set the salary based on the Pennsylvania Association of Township Supervisors’ figures, which show that for a comparable job in the state, which combines the sewer operator, secretary and labor positions, the average low wage for a secretary or operator is about $32,000 while the average wage for the two positions across the state is about $51,000.
They also set the salary for Township Roadmaster and Supervisor Mark Sackin at $19. 41 hourly, which reflects the 3-percent raise given all other township employees for 2012. Both votes were unanimous. Other township auditors are Lou Hill and Don Retort Jr.
Yeropoli said he will be responsible for billing, lab work, Department of Environmental Protection reports, handling tap-in requests and other work.
Supervisors also agreed to buy two computers and other hardware for sewage-plant billing from Spartan Software of Boardman, Ohio.
Also Tuesday, Mahoning Township Planning Commission Chairman Al Moran reported that the commission is working on an ordinance to protect township roads against the heavy equipment used in gas-well drilling. Moran said the ordinance has been sent to the township attorney for review.
Supervisors also announced that Moran will lead the committee to explore the feasibility of building a new township administration building. Other committee members are Frank Gallo, a local building contractor, Supervisor Gary Pezzuolo and Township Treasurer Gil Lucarelli.
Also Tuesday, supervisors hired a new part-time patrolman, James Laurenza, who also works as a full-time police officer for Union Township. He will be paid $12.67 per hour.
Supervisors had their annual reorganization meeting before Tuesday’s meeting. They took the following action and set the following rates of pay: Reappointed Morris as police chief at $22.28 hourly with full-time patrolmen at $14.85 hourly and part-time patrolmen $12.67; the township secretary will make $1,209 monthly and get an additional $275 monthly as zoning officer.
Treasurer Gil Lucarelli will make $1,435 monthly. The three supervisors all will serve as community-center directors at no salary, but each will receive two free rentals of the center, which rents for $350.
