The kindergarten through sixth-grade students at Holy Family School gathered for a Christmas performance on Dec. 14 and used one very important prop — a swath of fabric.

Their performance of “A Piece of Christmas” focused on that piece of fabric throughout the story of Jesus’ birth. During scenes and songs, Joseph wrapped the fabric around Mary to keep her warm, the shepherds towel dried their sheep after a bath and the angels raised the fabric to sing their praises to God.

The cloth weaved its way throughout the story, but all of its journeys relate back to the birth.

“This piece of cloth reminds us that the birth of Jesus is the most important part of Christmas and it is why we celebrate,” said actor James Maruca during the performance, in character as Joseph.

Music teacher Lindsey Macey worked with the Holy Family students since of October to bring the Christmas performance to the stage.

Macey said the play had a message that definitely applied to the Holy Family students.

“Because so many grades participated, the experience really offered a sense of community and working together as a school. ‘A Piece of Christmas’ championed that, too — everyone helped each other in the play, and I hope that is something that the kids can bring to their everyday lives even after the holiday season has passed,” Macey said.
