Canfield wrestlers take momentum into 2012

The Canfield varsity wrestling team went 3-1 in dual meets to end the 2011 portion of its schedule. Despite a lineup with just one senior, the Cards have started 13-3 in duals.
“We are off to a great start to the season,” said Canfield coach Dean Conley. ”We have a young team, but our kids put in a lot of work in the offseason and it is really showing now. We also have strong leadership from our team captains Zach Kay, Jake Dunbar and Anthony Spencer. We finished December strong and are looking forward to finishing strong.”
On Dec. 21, Canfield traveled to Akron and defeated Akron Hoban (60-17) and Akron Firestone (58-18). The next day, the squad beat host Alliance (49-25) and lost to perrenial power West Branch (52-24).
Top wrestlers for the week were Stephen Daprile (106 pounds, 4-0), Korey Frost (113, 2-0), Anthony Spencer (120, 2-0), Zach Kay (120, 1-1), Jake Dunbar (132, 4-0), Shawn Williams (145, 2-2), Bryan Batton (160, 2-2), John Poullas (160, 4-0), Stephen Hamilton (170, 2-2), Stan Socha (180, 3-1), Sam Connor (195, 4-0) and Curtis Burns (215, 2-0). Frost is now 14-0 on the season.
