Pa. police seek help in robberies, considering tie to Basilone murder

Staff report

SHARON, Pa.

Police are looking for help in solving a string of armed robberies that took place in Sharon and Farrell in late December.

In Farrell, Southwest Regional Police are trying to solve robberies dating back to Dec. 19, when two men with handguns tried to rob the Family Dollar on Sharon-New Castle Road. Nothing was taken in that robbery.

On Dec. 20, two men entered the B&M Market at 644 Wallis Ave. in Farrell, demanding money. One of them had a handgun, and the store clerk was shot in the hip during the robbery.

On Wednesday, two men entered the Wild Game Inn at 1101 Roemer Blvd. in Farrell and took money from patrons and the bartender. No one was hurt.

In Sharon, there were four armed robberies Dec. 28 and 29.

On the 28th at 8:33 p.m., a man entered a home on Quinby Street and pointed a handgun at residents. He stole a flat-screen TV. At 10:19 p.m., two men held up a 78-year-old woman at Prindle Street and Oakland Avenue and stole her purse.

On Dec. 29 at 6:16 p.m., a man pointed a gun at a 61-year-old victim on South Oakland Avenue, stole $36 and fled, police said. At 9:45 p.m., two men held up a 24-year-old victim at Wengler Avenue and Park Street and stole $30.

Police chiefs for Sharon and Southwest Regional Police Department both said they are investigating whether two suspects arrested in the slaying of a bar owner on Roemer Boulevard in Farrell on Friday night could be connected to any or all of the robberies.

William Basilone, 58, was shot to death outside Basilone’s after it closed.

Southwest Regional Chief Riley Smoot said police think the two suspects arrested Tuesday in his death, Joshua Stewart, 18, and Devine Campbell, 17, both of Farrell, intended to rob the bar.

Anyone with information in any of the robberies is asked to call police at 724-983-2720 or 724-662-6110.
