Popular bar owner killed in Farrell

FARRELL, Pa.

The owner of Basilone’s, a popular bar and eatery on Roemer Boulevard, was shot to death Friday outside the business, Southwest Regional Police said.

Fifty-eight-year-old William Basilone Jr. was shot at least six times in an alley outside Basilone’s around 11:30 p.m., police reported.

They say he was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Saturday the motive for the shooting was unknown, and the gunman remains at large.

Medical mission trips to Haiti

Substitute-teacher training on Jan. 26

LISBON

Substitute-teacher training will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Columbiana County Educational Service Center, 38720 Saltwell Road.

The cost is $15 for training and $60 for background checks, plus licensure fees. Licensure fees are $25 for one year or $125 for five years. Background checks can be completed the day of training. A continental breakfast will be provided.

Participants should bring: official college transcripts (bachelor’s degree required); driver’s license or picture ID; check or money order for $25 written out to “Treasurer, State of Ohio” for a one-year temporary substitute teaching certificate; $125 for the optional five-year certificate.

Suit settled over wait for disability benefits

The recent settlement of a class-action lawsuit over Ohio’s process for reviewing some health-care claims is expected to speed things up for thousands of disabled residents waiting on benefits to start.

People whose disability determination applications have been pending for more than 90 days will automatically be enrolled in Medicaid by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, The Blade in Toledo .

The agreement, filed in early December in U.S. District Court, also sets a timeline for the agency to ensure that most applicants don’t face such lengthy waiting periods.

Orientation and registration for the 2012 U.S. SARR Corps Academy class will take place at 10 a.m. Jan. 22 at the Wildflower Reserve Nature Center of Raccoon Creek State Park in Beaver County.
