Brown urges action to save postal jobs

WASHINGTON

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat from Avon, on Tuesday called for quick action to save postal-service jobs in Youngstown and across Ohio.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, Brown urged the Senate to pass postal-reform legislation that would restore the USPS to fiscal solvency.

Brown has co-sponsored the Postal Service Protection Act, which preserves Saturday mail delivery, restricts the closure of rural and urban post offices and protects mail-processing facilities.

The legislation would eliminate the federally mandated requirement that the postal service pre-fund 75 years’ worth of future retiree health benefits. This mandate costs USPS $5.5 billion annually and has accumulated 50 years’ worth of pension funds to date.

Last week, the USPS announced plans to close nine processing and distribution centers in Ohio, including Youngstown, despite a moratorium scheduled to last until May.

High-tech sizing

Niles

Eastwood Mall next month will introduce Me-Ality — measured reality.

Me-Ality is a free technological device that precisely determines a customer’s exact body measurements and provides a list of recommendations of where to find the best-fitting apparel for that body.

The customer registers basic demographic information then steps, fully clothed, into the Size Matching Station. The scanning wand rotates, and exact body measurements are captured and matched to the sizing specifications of apparel brands in Eastwood Mall’s database.

A shopping guide will appear on a touch-screen monitor, listing the stores that carry the precise items. A paper copy also is printed at no charge.

A Me-Ality size-matching station opens next Wednesday on the mall’s Center Court.
