All quiet day after violent Calif. tribal clash
COARSEGOLD, Calif. (AP) — Sheriff’s deputies are patrolling the area around a California tribal settlement where a fight between rival factions left three people wounded.
Madera County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart says it was quiet at the Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians today, one day after the fight.
The skirmish followed a takeover of a tribal office by a group whose leaders claim they were denied their rightful place on the tribe’s governing council in the wake of a disputed December election.
Supporters of the group say their candidates would overturn the tribe’s recent decisions to expel members.
The tribe owns the Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino in the Sierra foothills near Yosemite National Park.
The three people who were wounded in Tuesday’s fight are expected to recover.
