Pa. vet's name can be fixed because of cracked panel
YORK, Pa. (AP) — A cracked granite slab on a central Pennsylvania veterans memorial is a blessing in disguise — replacing it will mean fixing a misspelled name.
The memorial to veterans of the Vietnam War outside the York Expo Center was dedicated less than three years ago. But it soon developed a long crack in one granite panel.
Memorial committee member Susan McCleary tells The York Dispatch the slab has the name of Army Capt. Thomas Sauble misspelled with an extra A in his first name. Sauble’s name was correctly spelled on another slab.
Sauble’s wife Doris says her husband would have been good-natured about the mistake.
The York County Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund says it will cost about $4,000 to fix the broken panel.
