Major Puerto Rican official resigns amid probe


SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — One of Puerto Rico's best-known politicians has resigned from his posts and dropped a race for mayor amid domestic violence allegations.

Hector Ferrer has resigned as minority leader in the U.S. territory's House of Representatives and as vice president and spokesman of the Popular Democratic Party, one of the island's two main parties. He also said today he is dropping his race for mayor of San Juan, the capital.

Party leader Alejandro Garcia Padilla has appointed temporary candidates to some of those positions.
