Boardman teen to get Eagle Scout award
Travis E. Filicky, 16, a son of Ed and Lori Filicky of Boardman, will receive the Eagle Scout award by Boy Scouts of America Troop 60 of Boardman at a court-of-honor ceremony next Sunday at St. Charles Church, Boardman.
Travis was a member of Cub Scout Pack 114 for four years at the church and attained the highest honor, the Arrow of Light, in 2006. He also received the Light of Christ Award, Parvuli Dei Award, Gettysburg Historic Awards, and the Recruiter award.
He has been a member of Troop 60 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Boardman, since March 8, 2006. Scoutmaster is Byron Harnishfeger. He was inducted into Order of the Arrow, scouting’s honor society, in 2009.
For his Eagle Scout service project, he planned, organized, and managed the construction of four storage cabinets for the Student Snack Sack Program at West Boulevard Elementary School in Boardman.
Travis has had troop positions of scribe, den chief, librarian, and senior patrol leader. Currently, he is serving as patrol leader. He has served on the scouting district’s day-camp staff.
He has earned 30 merit badges and special scout awards of Totin’ Chip, Seven Ranges Fifth Year Pipestone Award, Ad Altare Dei Religious Award, International Catholic Awareness Award, four Rosary Patches, a Valley Forge Pin, and the Den Chief Service Award.
He also earned special troop awards including the Sourdough patch and a five-year service pin. He has participated in summer camp at Seven Ranges Scout Reservation, Klondike Derby competitions, Laurel Caverns, Gettysburg, and Valley Forge outings.
Travis is a junior at Boardman High School, where he is president of the Spanish Club. He is also a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, and theater orchestra. In addition, he is a member of the speech and debate team and participates in activities of the science and medical careers clubs.
He is a third generation Eagle Scout, following his father, Ed, and his grandfather, Andrew Filicky. He was recognized for his service project by the Boardman school board and the township trustees.
