Valley wrestlers advance in D1, D3

Waynedale led the Division III district wrestling meet after the first day with 67 points, followed by Garfield and Beachwood with 42.5 and 41, respectively.

Girard’s Zane Chase (113 pounds) decioned Smithville’s Reed Hostetler, 11-10, then lost to Berkshire’s T.J. Malkus, 4-2. Next, Chase faces Hawken’s Sean McKinley.

At 132, Pymatuning Valley’s Zach Campbell is in the championship quarterfinals and South Range’s Kirklin Grahovac and Girard’s Dan Johntony are still alive in consolations.

After losing, Grahovac pinned Beachwood’s Andrew Kitay in 1:36, while Johntony’s second match was a 15-0 win via technical fall over Cardinal’s Joey Roach.

Jackson-Milton’s Nate Skaggs and Grand Valley’s Travis Pelles are still alive at 138.

Pymatuning Valley’s Zach Benedict and Liberty’s Ty Banks are in separate consolation matches at 145.

In a 152 championship quarterfinal, Liberty’s Tyrell Jethrow is still alive and will face Manchester’s Travis Caskey.

At 160, South Range’s Max Brookes scored a 16-1 technical fall over Lutheran West’s Andrew Liese, then lost via major decision to Waynedale’s Zebulun Beam, 14-6.

Crestview’s Matt Hardenbrook lost a decision at 170, then pinned Black River’s Jake Maund in the consolations in 2:40. Next, Hardenbrook will face Northwest’s Beau Fortune.

At 182, Liberty’s C.J. Edmonds lost once, then decisioned Wickliffe’s Kai Haavisto, 6-0. Edmonds will meet Waterloo’s Kristian Youngblood.

At 220, Brookfield’s David Jamieson pinned Wickliffe’s Dale Baker at 1:40 in the consolations and will meet Cardinal’s Caleb Fry.

At 285, it’ll be an all-area matchup in the consolations between Brookfield’s Mark Hiner and Liberty’s Fred Clark.

Division I

MENTOR

Boardman’s Nick Mancini and Nico Graziani and Fitch’s Lennie McGeachy each won a pair of matches on the first day of the Division I district meet at Mentor High School.

Wrestling at 106 pounds, Mancini pinned Euclid’s Ebraham Elbagory in 1:25, then pinned Hoover’s Nathan Burns in 3:08.

Graziani (160 pounds) earned a major decision over Hoover’s Tyler Maloy, 15-5, then decisioned Parma’s Jake Toth 9-2.

Heavyweight McGeachy pinned Cleveland Heights’ Mario Patton in 1:42, then decisioned Cleveland JFK’s Nathan Phillips.
