Adult Career Education at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is helping individuals receive the safety education and training in the shale industry by hosting a series of basic and in-depth courses.

MCCTC will offer one-day PEC Premier Basic Orientation Safety Training from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 6 and March 27. The training is required for access to the shale site including workers, delivery personnel and/or vendors.

An advanced training will include the three-day PEC Premier Core Compliance Safety Training from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 17, 18 and 19 all at the Career Center. Participants must attend all three sessions of the core training and pass testing requirements in order to receive their SafeLand USA national certification. With this certification, participants will have the background and training necessary for entrance into shale careers.

PEC Premier is an accrediting organization providing safety training for the onshore oil and gas industry.

Basic orientation is an awareness course designed to give each participant general knowledge about the life and safety issues of the oil and gas industry including upstream, downstream, onshore and offshore.

The Core Compliance Training is a three-day intensive course combining health, safety and environmental training certifications. Participants will receive in-depth safety training and information necessary for employment in the field, plus individuals completing the Core Course will receive their SafeLand USA certification.

All courses will be taught by Don Waldron, a fire instructor for MCCTC Adult Career Education with more than 35 years of experience in the emergency management, health and safety field. Waldron serves as the Chief of the Trumbull County Hazardous Materials Bureau and has experience in OSHA standards, EPA requirements and DOT requirements. Waldron is a certified PEC instructor.

This marks the first time MCCTC has offered shale-related training courses.
