This fall, the students at Union Elementary were encouraged to get physically active for a minimum of 20 minutes a day for 40 days. Students took on the challenge with full participation and received a reward for their devotion to fitness in the form of their Feb. 15 Radio Disney dance party.

Radio Disney Cleveland personalities Jag and Taylor hosted the event, along with their Road Crew. Jag began the event with congratulations to the students.

“Out of 160 schools and over 54,000 students eligible, you are the winners of our dance party. That’s really amazing, guys,” he told the students.

The party, hosted in part with Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, included a donation of a deluxe activity kit of athletic equipment including basketballs, bean bags, jump ropes, cones and hoops. Officials from both organizations also offered a plaque and banner to principal Mike Masucci to be displayed at Union.

After official business was out of the way, the Radio Disney crew moved on to the ‘party’ part of their visit. Students followed the crew as they stretched together, eventually adding dance moves, hops, kicks, and jumping jacks.

The hosts held a hula hoop contest, choreographed group dance and challenged select students to see how many times they could jump rope, bounce a basketball on the ground, or bounce a soccer ball on their knee. Teachers even had a chance to join the fun, with ten brave movers and shakers showing their rhythm in a teacher dance-off.

Officials from Radio Disney were happy to see the Union students having so much fun.

“Of course, we hope that they’re having such a blast they’ll forget it’s exercise. There is a lot of intense cardio snuck in with all the fun dancing. We want to show the kids that it is easy to make getting active this much fun, and we hope they’ll include it in their own lives,” said Sam Pietrangelo, promotion manager for the Cleveland station.
