1821: Mexican rebels issue their declaration of independence from Spain.

1912: The American Jewish women’s organization Hadassah is founded in New York City.

1920: The German Workers Party, which later becomes the Nazi Party, meets in Munich to adopt its platform.

1942: The SS Struma, a charter ship attempting to carry Jewish refugees from Romania to Palestine during World War II, is torpedoed and sunk by a Soviet submarine after being towed and abandoned in the Black Sea by Turkish authorities; all but one of the 769 refugees on board perish.

1992: Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain marries Hole lead vocalist Courtney Love in Hawaii.

1987: Trumbull County Coroner Dr. Joseph Sudimack Jr. resigns to take a job as medical director of a Columbus rehabilitation center.

U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. calls mayors of Mahoning and Trumbull county cities together at a private meeting at the Mahoning Country Club to hear his plea for creation of three regional planning committees, on water, transportation and economic development.

1972: Niles teachers will vote on a base salary offer of $6,900 a year, $100 more than the Board of Education’s previous offer and $200 less than teachers had been seeking.

The Ohio Edison Co. will extend its deadline for eliminating steam heat service in Youngstown and two other cities two years, into mid-1975.

John P. Manning, traffic manager for the Koppers Co., is elected president of the Youngstown Traffic Club, succeeding Patrick J. Loney Jr. of Associated Truck Lines.

1962: A Warren man and three prostitutes who were kicked out of Mahoning County are fined $300 after being arrested by state liquor agents at the Kitty Kat Club in Steubenville.

The worst winter storm in years leaves much of Ohio lies under crippling snow and ice.

1937: Youngstown police are seeking four garbage collectors on charges of using city fire hydrants to water down their loads. The city pays garbage collectors on the basis of the weight of their loads and City Engineer Albert R. Haenny estimates it has overpaid by about $700 in recent months.

Herbert Ames, former treasurer of the League of Nations, tells Youngstown Rotarians at the Hotel Ohio that the next great war will be fought in the air, battles of reprisals between enormous air squadrons rather ground battles.
