Poland girls basketball round-up

On Jan. 23, the Poland girls seventh-grade basketball team lost to Austintown Blue, 23-16. Emily Cammack and Joelle Abi Habib led the Dogs with four points each.

The Bulldogs improved their record on Jan. 30 when they defeated Hubbard, 18-13. Emily Melnek was the top scorer for Poland with eight points. Julia Cooper and Jillian Penman each added three points.

Poland defeated Howland on Feb. 1, 18-14. Penman paced the Bulldogs with six points. Melnek added four, while Bella Bury and Sydney Rowe scored two points each.

On Feb. 6, the Lady Bulldogs knocked off arch-rival Canfield, 24-21. Penman scored 10 and Melnek added nine points as Poland improved to 10-5 on the season.

Poland was defeated by Austintown Red, 31-19 on Feb. 8. Poland had three players scoring four points, including Melnek, Carlie Lattanzio and Joelle Abi Habib. Kasey Valentini added two points for the Bulldogs.

Poland alum stars at Baldwin-Wallace

Baldwin-Wallace College junior guard Ben Umbel, a graduate of Poland High School, led the Yellow Jackets basketball team to victories against John Carroll University (78-62) and Capital University (76-65) last week.

Umbel scored 20 points, grabbed 19 rebounds, passed for 13 assists, made five steals and blocked three shots in the two games. He had 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and a blocked shot in the win against JCU. Umbel carries a 3.97 g.p.a. in biology and pre-med.

Mooney dinner March 4

The Cardinal Mooney High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame Ron Stoops Scholarship Dinner will be at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman on March 4. Buffet dinner and open bar are scheduled between 6 and 8 p.m. and the induction ceremony will start promptly at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $65 or $520 (table of 8). Proceeds will benefit the Ron Stoops Scholarship Fund. For reservations, call 330-788-5007.
