After a five-year break, the regional Math 24 competition relaunched on Feb. 2 at Warren G. Harding High School, with finalists competing from schools throughout Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Dobbins fourth-graders Jake Bacon, Tyler Berry, Jared Tucker, and Bailey Swogger recently took home some big wins at the competition.

To qualify for the regional competition, all four boys were part of the top 16 fourth-grade students in Mahoning County. When they arrived at the event, Bacon, Berry and Tucker advanced to the 16 in the region.

In increasingly tough rounds, Berry excelled to a final fourth-place spot and Tucker zoomed to a first-place finish. Tucker’s win makes him the No. 1 Math 24 competitor in the fourth-grade throughout Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

The boys said having a good attitude helped during the competition.

“We had a good feeling about the competition on our way there and we really supported each other,” said Bacon.

“In Math 24, we compete as a Poland team and for ourselves, too. I’m really happy we did well and I think we’ll be staying with it and competing each year,” Tucker added.

Fourth-grade teacher Marlene Booher said this year’s excellent Math 24 team was due to the focus and hard work of the boys.

“The competition was supposed to be held on Jan. 19, and when it was postponed, the boys gathered that night and still practiced to stay sharp. We have Math 24 practices after school, but these boys went above and beyond. They took every opportunity to practice and really applied their skills,” Booher said.
