Cardinals end season with loss to Aurora

The Canfield Cardinals could only muster 11 shots in a season-ending 4-0 loss against Aurora at the OHSAA sectional hockey tournament held at Kent State. Canfield ends the season at 5-21.

Seniors Sean Meditz (Blue Division Honorable Mention) and Roger Gesier (Blue East second team) were named to the GCHSHL all-star teams. Gesier ends his Canfield hockey career with 2,407 saves, a state-record and this season saved 91 percent of shots faced with a goals against average of 3.96.

Meditz set the school record for most games played in a career at 99.

The league also announced that the Cardinals will be a part of the Blue Central (East) division with Twinsburg, Nordonia, Brush and West Geauga for the 2012-13 campaign.

Canfield wrestlers compete in league championships

The Canfield High School wrestling Red team competed in the JV EOWL league championships on Feb. 11.

Top placers for the Cards were Ross Duffett at 106, third place; Ben Siegle at 113, third place; Matt Dunbar at 126, 2-0 before an injury; Adam Nye at 138, fifth place; Matt Burns at 138, third place; Tibor Shandor Baki at 160, fourth place and Ed Curran at 160, second place.

“We have a great group of kids on our Red team. Many of these kids have seen some varsity action this year, and would be starting on most varsity teams in the area. They push our varsity kids in the practice room every day, and that’s invaluable,” said varsity coach Dean Conley.

Lady Cardinals host youth softball clinic

The Canfield High School Lady Cardinals will host a youth softball clinic on Saturday. Players ages 7-10 will meet from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and players ages 11-14 will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. The cost is $20 per player.

Mooney scholarship dinner is March 4

The Cardinal Mooney High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame Ron Stoops Scholarship Dinner will be at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman on March 4. Buffet dinner and open bar are scheduled between 6 and 8 p.m. and the induction ceremony will start promptly at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $65 or $520 (table of 8). Proceeds will benefit the Ron Stoops Scholarship Fund. For reservations, call 330-788-5007.

Golf event set for this summer

The annual Pink Ribbon Gold Classic will be held at Tippecanoe Country Club on July 16.

All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.

The Pink Ribbon committee will also sponsor a bus trip this spring to a local casino. Watch for further details on both of these events.
