MERCER, PA.

The trustees of the UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship Fund are accepting applications from Mercer County, Pa., area medical-school students through April 15.

Scholarship applicants are limited to individuals from the UPMC Horizon service area who have successfully completed their first year of an allopathic or osteopathic medical school. To apply, call Julie Anderson at 724-589-6224.

Campus receives status

SHARON, PA.

Penn State Shenango has received Developing Program Status from the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education enabling Penn State Shenango to begin offering an associate in science in Occupational Therapy program. To apply, call 724-983-2803, or visit shenango.psu.edu.

Activity Director Award

Austintown

Susan Greco, a five-year employee of Victoria House, 5295 Ashley Circle, an assisted-living community, has received the Outstanding Activity Director Award 2011 from the Ohio Assisted Living Association.

In her nomination for the award, Greco was praised for “inspiring everyone around her with her dedication and caring” and “constantly planning, creating activities that bring fun and excitement to her residents.”

Walk for Hope

BOARDMAN

The Big Reach Center of Hope, 11767 Lisbon Road, Greenford, is having its third annual Walk for Hope at the Boardman High School Sports Complex on June 2.

The walk will benefit the Center of Hope’s outreach efforts to help low-income and under-served individuals and families from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties and surrounding communities by providing them with education, food and clothing.

Big Reach, a nonprofit ministry of the Greenford Christian Church, is seeking business or individual sponsors. Sponsorship options include: “The Big Muscle” Event for $3,000; “Strength Trainer” for $1,000; “Calorie Counter” for $500 and “Hunger Buster” for $100.

Menopause program

SALEM

On March 13, gynecologist Dr. David Drake will present a free community program, “Menopause on Venus and Beyond,” to help people understand the transitions occurring for women and men at this time in their lives. Dr. Drake will discuss ways that women can achieve optimum levels of health and new menopause-management strategies, such as bioidentical hormonal therapy.

The program is at the Salem Community Center, 1098 North Ellsworth Ave., Salem, at 6:30 p.m. There will be educational displays followed by Dr. Drake’s presentation at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided, and there are door prizes. Call Salem Community Hospital at 330-332-7152 to register.

Hospital receives award

SHARON, PA.

VHA Inc., the national health-care alliance, has recognized Sharon Regional Health System as one of three qualifying VHA Pennsylvania hospitals to receive an Achieving Patient Care Excellence award as a leading performer in falls prevention.

Sharon Regional’s Fall Prevention Team, led by Paula Cica, registered nurse, director of quality, consists of nursing leadership from units throughout Sharon Regional.

The YWCA of Youngstown, an Ohio Benefit Bank Site, is offering free income-tax-filing assistance for households with income $60,000 and under.

Training for parents

Warren

Northeast Ohio Adoption Services invites singles or couples who hope to adopt or provide foster care for an Ohio school-aged child or brother-sister group to register for “Spring Training for Parents.” It will offer free interactive pre-placement education sessions to learn more about Ohio children in care of the child-welfare system.

The spring series runs March 23 through April 21 at NOAS, 5000 E. Market St., Suite 26. If a person misses a session, it can be made up. Reservations are required by March 15. Call John Hostetler at 800-686-6627, ext. 123. NOAS does not charge fees to families for adoption.

Osteoarthritis program

HERMITAGE, Pa.

Orthopaidic Surgeon Dr. Edward Uberti, with Parkside Orthopedics-UPMC, will present “Options in the Treatment of Osteoarthritis of the Knee” on March 20 at 4 p.m. at the UPMC Centers for Rehab Services in Hermitage Crossing Plaza on North Hermitage Road.

The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
