2 old Japanese grenades found at Ohio estate sale

KETTERING, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say two Japanese grenades from the World War II era caused a scare when they were found during an estate sale in a residential area of southwestern Ohio.

The Dayton Daily News reports the Dayton bomb squad was called Sunday evening after someone found the explosives at the sale in suburban Kettering. The squad safely detonated the devices in an open field.

Larry Hyatt was running the sale and says the trigger string for the devices was “rotten-looking.”

Kettering police were worried about the potential hazard of the old explosives, and they suspended radio transmission during the incident out of concern the communication frequencies would trigger a blast. They also told onlookers near the house to avoid using their cellphones until the grenades were removed.
