Warren G. Harding High School’s Quiz Bowl Team traveled to Columbus earlier this month and brought home top honors in the Ohio National History Bowl and Bee.

The National History Bowl is an interscholastic team history competition with a quiz bowl format, and the Bee pits individual students against one another answering questions from American and World history.

The team faced off against seven of the best teams from around the state in preliminary rounds.

They beat Tippecanoe in the semifinals before facing off against St. Charles Prep in the final round, beating them with a score of 310-190.

The bowl team consisted of seniors Michael Coates, who is team captain; Korey Gall, Joseph Angelo and junior Patrick Shannon. All four young men competed in the bee, making it into the quarterfinals.

Facing off against six other bee participants, Coates and Gall were the only two from Harding to make into the semifinals, and after eliminating the players from Sidney and St. Charles, faced off against each other in the final.

The bee ended with Coates being declared state champion and Gall runner-up. The team will be moving on to compete against top schools from around the U.S. at the National Bee and Bowl in April in Arlington, Va.

Coates also made the Ohio All-Star Team over the weekend for the second year in a row.

He and five other top quiz bowlers from around the state will be representing Ohio in the National All-Star Academic Tournament in June at the Ohio State University.
