Historical Society announces meeting

The next regular meeting of the Poland Historical Society is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. The meeting and meetings on the third Tuesday of each month will be held in the Little Red School House on the corner of Center and Struthers Road.

Plans for 2012 activities will be discussed. Members are encouraged to attend and bring a friend. Membership applications will be available at the meeting, 2012 dues are $10 per person.

Prince of Peace hosts pancake supper

Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2985 Center Road, Poland, will host a pancake and sausage supper on Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with a free-will offering to cover costs. Following the supper, the New Castle Eintracht Maennerchor will offer a selection of songs.

Ash Wednesday services with Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion will be offered at 12:05 p.m. and at 7:00 p.m.

On Wednesdays during Lent, a soup supper will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. with a worship service following. The sermon series is “At the Foot of the Cross,” featuring people who were involved with the Passion of Christ. For more information call 330-757-3272.

Youngstown Club hosts wine tasting

The Youngstown Club is hosting a wine tasting on Feb. 25 to benefit the Mahoning County DD Special Olympics. Chef Anthony will use his culinary expertise to pair delicious hors devours with various wines to enhance the complimentary flavors of both.

Guild searches for vendors

Historical Society meeting set for Feb. 21

The Poland Township Historical Society will meet on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Little Red School House located at the intersection of Route 224 and Struthers Road. Residents of Poland Village or Township interested in preserving the community’s heritage are encouraged to attend.

Poland grad begins Marine training

Brad A. Mullis, a 2007 graduate of Poland Seminary High School, recently graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry

. A four-year participant in the Navy ROTC program as a Marine option, Mullis was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps on Dec. 19, 2011. He will begin Marine officer training in Quantico, Va., this summer.

Enjoy Yellow Creek Park Winter Concert

The Yellow Creek Park Winter Concert will be Thursday at 7 p.m. in Yellow Creek Lodge. The Erie Heights Brass Ensemble, Dixieland will perform.

Breakfast Botany: Monkey Puzzle Family set

View highlights of the Gardens in winter on a brisk outdoor walk on Friday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Return to the Garden Caf for a light breakfast and learn more about members of the monkey puzzle family.

Express yourself at writing workshop

Join Karen Schubert in writing about meaningful, everyday experiences on Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The workshop will explore various topics to shape writing about them. Bring a pen and some paper. All levels of experience are welcome.

Visit Twice-Loved Book Sale

Shop at the used book sale in the lobby of the Davis Education and Visitor Center from now through Feb. 26 for gardening books, cookbooks and horticulture magazines. The sale benefits the Antonucci Library at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Donations of used gardening books are always appreciated.

Visit the Jewels of Winter: Orchids

Visit the orchid display at Fellows Riverside Gardens to feel transported to the tropics now through March 18. View the many colorful varieties of orchids, like exquisite jewels, to lift your spirits during the heart of winter.

Health and wellness walks set

The Mill Creek MetroParks is sponsoring a health and wellness walk. Join for the health of it and experience the many benefits of walking. The walk will be on Feb. 29 at 6 p.m., meet at Ford Nature Center. Moderate difficulty, four miles.

Area writers group to meet in Canfield

Area writers are invited to attend Monday Night Writers on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf . Led by author and professional writer Nancy Christie, the two-hour sessions will include both writing exercises and discussions on the creative and business aspects of writing. Those with ‘works-in-progress’ are welcome to bring copies of their projects for comments and critiques from the group. The fee is $10 per class and registration is preferred. Trim a tree for February

The Poland library invites children of all ages to decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree. This program is going on from now till Feb. 29 during library hours.

Wine and beer tasting scheduled

Team Schein is hosting a Wine and Beet Tasting at Vintage Estate Wine and Beer in Boardman on Feb. 26 from 3 to 5 p.m. The cost is $20 per person and includes six tastings. Choose from six wine selections or 12 beers on tap from the Diamond bar, Hors D’Oeuvres and musical entertainment by Ryan Ross. You must be 21 to purchase a ticket and attend the event. Wintertime Tea: For Love of a Book

Join Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens for an elegant and entertaining afternoon tea on Feb. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. Eat tea sandwiches and sweets. Participate in sky craft

During the month of February, the Poland library invites school-aged children to make art on a string to swing from the sky above the librarian’s desk.

Pajama Jam: Sleepy time fun for the family

The Poland library will host Pajama Jam on Feb. 27 from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Put on your pajamas and bring the whole family for stories and more fun.

Tales for 2s and 3s

The Poland library will host Baby Brilliant: Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. The program will include developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children, ages 2-3, become successful readers. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies, books

The Poland library will be hosting Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books for babies 6-23 months on Feb. 22 and 29 at 10 a.m. The program will include developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children become successful readers. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Men’s Garden Club sponsors scholarship

The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown is sponsoring it’s 21st annual horticulture scholarship for high school seniors and college students pursuing a degree in horticulture, landscape design or allied subjects. Mahoning Valley Pizza Cook-Off tickets on sale

Tickets are now on sale for the The Potential Development Program’s 2012 Mahoning Valley Pizza Cook-Off, sponsored by BeautiStone. Wine charity event set

The Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley presents its second annual Wine for Hope, featuring dining stations and gourmet dessert station complete with fine wines, entertainment, memorabilia silent auction and raffles. The event will take place on Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. inside Antone’s Banquet Centre.

Tickets are on sale now for $50 per person and a cash bar.
