Community Foundation sponsors scholarships

The Boardman Community Foundation has elected new officers, including Deborah Liptak, president, Mark Luke, vice president, Ronald Chordas, treasurer and Jim Rosa, past president and secretary.
Board members are Joseph Sylvester, George Grim, Steven Davenport, Mike Kocjancic, Robert Mastriana and Terrance Daprile.
The mission of the organization is to enhance the community spirit by addressing community needs through providing opportunities for partnerships to support donor and community initiative creating legacies for today and tomorrow.
The Boardman Community Foundation has raised $16,000, which includes a major contribution from Hill, Barth and King LLC.
This year’s community project for the foundation is two scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each contributed by a collaboration of the Boardman Community Foundation and the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.
The applicant for this scholarship must be a Boardman resident and a senior in high school. The applicant needs to write an 800-word essay on “Why is Boardman, Ohio, a great place to call home for you?”
Applications are available at guidance offices at Boardman, Mooney, Ursuline and Youngstown Christian high schools. Applicants may also apply online at www.boardmanfund.org. The deadline for the application is March 31 and must be returned to the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley Office.
The scholarship will be made to a 501 (c3) institution for higher education in the name of the scholarship recipient.
A selection committee will be established with no fewer than three people to review the applications. The foundation’s Board of Directors will approve the appointment of the selection committee. The donor, advisers or related parties cannot benefit from the scholarship fund.
The committee will base its decision on whether the applicant is a Boardman resident, has a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, ACT/SAT scores, school activities, noteworthy achievements, awards and recognition, work history, class rank or percentage ranking, special talents, community and personal activities, quality of the essay and two letters of recommendation.
