Canfield swimmers qualify for districts

Canfield High School freshman Sarah Heaven broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke on Saturday at the Division I sectional swim meet at the University of Akron.

Heaven swam a 1:01.34, breaking Meghan Linnelli’s time of 1:02.21, set in 2002.

She will compete in three events at the Cleveland St. district Friday — 100-yard backstroke, the 200-yard individual medley and as a member of the 200-yard medley relay.

Heaven wasn’t the only star for the Canfield swim team. The squad placed fourth overall and six athletes qualified for this weekend’s district meet.

Olivia Williamson qualified in the 100 breaststroke, 200 individual medley and relay. Mallory Allen will compete in the 100 fly, 500 free and medley relay, while Briana O’Malley is in the medley relay and Ally Chiu advanced in the diving competition.

The Canfield boys team won the sectional meet with 395 points. Walsh Jesuit was second with 377.5 points.

Canfield’s Daniel Bogen won the 200 free (1:47.76) and 100 free (48.94). He also was a member of Canfield’s first-place relay team in the 200 free and 400 free.

Nicky Monpalto and Mark Dalvin also were on those teams. Connor Brady was on the 200 team and Mike DiDomenico was on the 400 squad.

Canfield’s medley relay team (Brady, DiDomenico, Adam Weiss and Jake Smith) finished second.

Brady was second in the 100 fly and 100 back races while Drew Bennett was second in 500 free. Monpalto was second in the 100 free.
