Witness: Woman who died diving held under water
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A witness says he saw a man holding an Alabama woman under water moments before she sank to the ocean’s bottom during a honeymoon dive in Australia.
Dr. Stanley Stutz testified today in the capital murder trial of Gabe Watson. Stutz is a key witness for the prosecution.
Stutz told jurors he was diving when he saw Tina Thomas Watson floating lifelessly on her back. Stutz says a man in a dark wetsuit went to her and reached his arms around her before swimming to the surface.
As the man swam upward, Stutz says the woman sank lifelessly to the bottom.
Prosecutors say Stutz witnessed Watson killing his wife for insurance money, but the defense says her death was an accident.
