Public event Saturday at St. Casimir's before final service Feb. 25

YOUNGSTOWN

The Ethnic Heritage Society will sponsor a presentation on the history of St. Casimir Polish Roman Catholic Church, 149 Jefferson St., at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The main speaker will be the Rev. Joseph Rudjak, EHS president, who grew up in the parish. The church will have its final service at 4 p.m. Feb. 25.

The church has been a landmark in the historic Brier Hill neighborhood since 1906, when Polish American residents of the district requested permission to establish a new parish. The parish grew steadily over the next two decades, prompting construction of the current Spanish Mission-style church completed in 1927.

Also at the meeting will be Sandra Cika, co-director of EHS, and lifelong member of St. Casimir Church.

The event is open to the public, and refreshments will be provided by members of the parish.
