NYC says no more restaurant meals for winning dog

NEW YORK (AP) — Even if they sit up and beg, future winners of New York City’s Westminster Dog Show won’t get the traditional victory steak at Sardi’s.

The New York Post reports that the city Health Department plans to enforce its rules against pets in restaurants.

This year’s winner, Malachy the Pekingese, lunched at the theater district restaurant on Wednesday. He had his favorite chicken and rice instead of steak.

But Health Department spokesman John Kelly says future winners will have to make do with a doggie bag. He says everyone should obey the rules “without whining or begging.”

Restaurant owner Max Klimavicius pointed out that Malachy was served in a private room on the second floor, away from other diners. He said he was sorry to see the tradition end.
