University of Akron studies future of its arena

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — The University of Akron is studying its basketball arena as it considers whether it might remodel the facility or build a new one in the coming years.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports the school has been quietly working with designers on a nearly $50,000 study to analyze the potential expense of fixing up Rhodes Arena. The facility built nearly three decades ago includes the 5,500-seat arena, along with office space and classrooms.

A school official who oversees facilities management says it’s early in the process and it’s not yet clear which option the school might choose for the future of the facility.

Akron’s mayor says some school officials would want a new arena on campus, but some local government officials have pushed for one downtown.
