Bullets almost hit woman lying in bed

Staff report

new castle, pa.

A woman was lying in bed when bullets from shooting in the street whizzed through her house, one just missing her head.

The woman “hit the floor” during Monday night’s shooting and crawled to her bathroom, where she stayed until she believed it would be safe to call 911, New Castle police reported.

The shooting occurred at 10:41 p.m. outside a Halco Street apartment in the public housing on Grant Street.

Two New Castle officers who were working a Lawrence County housing detail went to the area on a call that shots were fired.

A Union Township officer who was in the area also responded, and told the New Castle officers he spoke with two women who were walking in the area and heard the shooting.

They did not see the shooter, but complained that shooting at the complex is “an every-night event,” the police report says.

The police searched the area, but found no one. Their dispatcher then told them to meet the woman at her apartment.

Police discovered that a bullet had penetrated the bedroom wall just below where her head had been.

An officer found a bullet from a .380-caliber gun l ying on the bedroom floor, and there was blown-out drywall all over the woman’s pillow and sheet.

Police discovered another bullet had penetrated the living room wall next to a recliner.

There was more blown-out drywall in the living room, and police found the second bullet on a set of stairs.

Police are going to review video-surveillance tapes.
