Top 25
No. Georgetown 71, St. John’s 61
WASHINGTON
Freshman Greg Whittington scored a career-high 12 points, and Georgetown hit clutch 3-pointers down the stretch. Whittington, Jason Clark and Markel Starks all hit 3s in the final 6 minutes to counter the Red Storm’s momentum in a game in which Georgetown never trailed — but also never led by double digits until the final 5 seconds. Nate Lubick finished with seven points, eight rebounds, five assists and a career-high four blocks for the Hoyas (19-5, 9-4), who shot 61 percent in the second half and moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Big East. D’Angelo Harrison scored 24 points, and Moe Harkless had 20 for the Red Storm (10-15, 4-9), who fell to a nation’s-worst 0-10 against Top 25 teams.
Big Ten
No. 22 Michigan 70, Illinois 61
ANN ARBOR, Mich.
Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 15 points and Evan Smotrycz added 13 to help Michigan remain unbeaten at home. Trey Burke added 14 points for the Wolverines (19-7, 9-4 Big Ten), but it was Smotrycz and Hardaway who provided a big lift by shaking off their shooting slumps in the first half. Brandon Paul led Illinois (16-9, 5-7) with 21 points and Tyler Griffey added 18. The Fighting Illini have lost six of seven and are on the NCAA tournament bubble despite wins over Ohio State and Michigan State.
Horizon League
Detroit 77, Green Bay 74
DETROIT
Chase Simon scored 24 points and Ray McCallum Jr. 15 to lead Detroit. LaMarcus Lowe added 15 points and Jason Calliste 11 for the Titans (15-12, 9-6 Horizon League), who held on as Green Bay missed three 3-point attempts in the final nine seconds. Keifer Sykes had 14 points to lead five players scoring in double figures for the Phoenix (10-14, 6-8). Alec Brown added 13 points, Kam Cerroni 12 and Brennan Cougill and Steve Baker 11 each. Cerroni made four 3-pointers. But in the frantic finish, Cerroni, Cougill, then Cerroni again failed to connect from behind the arc before the buzzer. Detroit won for the eighth time in 10 games.
Wright State 70, Milwaukee 46
DAYTON
Cole Darling had 21 points and nine rebounds and Reggie Arceneaux added 14 points to lead Wright State. Vance Hall had 13 points and Julius Mays 12 for the Raiders (12-15, 7-8 Horizon League), who shot 57.1 percent (24 of 42) from the floor. Wright State made 15 of 22 field-goal tries in the second half to break open a game it led 29-22 at the break. Tony Meier and Shaquille Boga had 10 points each for the Panthers, who made only 14 of 44 (31.8 percent) shots from the field. The Raiders quickly erased any Milwaukee hope of a comeback at the start of the second half. In a 3:01 stretch, Arceneaux hit a 3-pointer, Darling scored and Hall hit two shots, one from behind the arc, to give Wright State a 41-23 cushion. The Panthers got no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
