Square dancers do get around

Members of the Friendly Squares, a square dance club, danced recently at a 1950s-themed event for their monthly meeting. From left to right are Tony Wildman of Cortland, Itala Landers of Canfield, “Elvis” and JoAnn Sloan of Warren.
Members of the Friendly Squares, a square dance club, have been very busy lately.
Sixteen members went to WKBN-TV Channel 27 and WYTV-TV Channel 33 on Jan. 17. Half the group danced on Channel 27 with Jeff Levkulich and Amy Radinovic.
The other half danced with Len Rome and Jim Loboy on Channel 33.
On Jan. 18, the club had its monthly dance at the Senior Center in Niles. That one featured a 1950s theme, and Elvis, a k a Tom Montgomery, was “in the house.”
On Jan. 22 the Friendly Squares hosted an Akron Federation student dance. Members and students from several clubs attended. Gene Hammond was the caller at each event, and his wife, Frankie, was the line dance cuer.
The next event for the club will be its Valentine Dance, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Niles Senior Center. The cost is $5 per person, and it’s open to any plus-level western-style square dancer or new dancer level.
On May 4 through 6, the club will participate in the 52nd Ohio Dance Convention at the John S. Knight Center in Akron.
The state convention takes place in different parts of the state each year.
