Struthers boys, Fitch girls win sectional bowling titles

Defending state champion Corey Bayus, a senior from Struthers, placed second at Saturday’s Mahoning-Trumbull sectional bowling tournament at Holiday Bowl, leading the Wildcats to the team title.
Bayus’ three-game total of 770 was 21 pins behind individual champion Dwayne Learn Jr. of Fitch. The Falcons placed second overall with a score of 4,515, 13 pins behind Struthers.
Champion was third with 4,376, followed by Boardman (4,334), Liberty (4,293) and Hubbard (4,191). The top six teams and individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the district meet at AMF Twin Star Lanes in Kent.
Liberty’s Rickey Evans (743), Boardman’s James Tancabel (738) and Champion’s Zach Richards (727) rounded out the top five individual scores.
Fitch’s girls team had 4,229 pins to finish as sectional champion.
Fitch was followed by Hubbard (4,178); Girard (3,627); LaBrae (3,605); Boardman (3,453) and Struthers (3,339) as teams to advance to the district.
Fitch’s Katie Viglio had the highest three-game score of 693, followed by Hubbard’s Samantha Dudley with 681, Fitch’s Molly Custer (643), LaBrae’s Tiffany Wame (642) and Hubbard’s Jenna Wise (630).
The top individual not on a qualifying team was Lakeview’s Kayla Reese with a three-game score of 613. Besides Reese, other individuals advancing to the district were Liberty’s Marissa Simon (597), Warren Harding’s Stacy Tucker (594), Ursuline’s Monica Simon (572), Warren JFK’s Alexis Drummond (566) and Howland’s Kelly Dungan (533).
At the district at Twin Star Lanes, the boys bowl on Feb. 25 at noon, and the girls bowl on Feb. 26 starting at noon.
