Michalojko tourney upcoming

The 11th annual Michael “Mickey” Michalojko Memorial Scratch Tournament is Feb. 26 at Colonial Lanes in New Castle.

The event matches some of the tri-state area’s best bowlers, who will compete for a guaranteed first-place prize of $2,200.

Michalojko was a longtime proprietor of Colonial and Shenango Bowl-A-Way, with a career spanning 50+ years. He was one of New Castle’s top bowlers during the 50s, 60s and 70s and was elected to the Lawrence County Bowling Assn. Hall of Fame in 1973 and to the Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame’s hall of honor in 2006.

The Michalojko format will consist of two, four-game qualifying squads: Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Qualifiers will then compete in a finals format.

Space for each qualifying squad is limited to 72 bowlers.

The entry fee is $65 in advance and $80 on Feb. 26.

Pizza Joe’s is the main sponsor. Proceeds from the tournament and additional sponsorship monies will go towards the scholarship fund in Michalojko’s name. Last year, $2000 in scholarship money was distributed to area junior bowlers and, to date, over $15,000 has been awarded.

Entry forms may be picked up at Colonial or call (724) 654-5000. Entries are on a first-come, first-served basis.

The public is encouraged to attend.
