Boardman’s Bailey ties for first in butterfly

Boardman junior Ryan Bailey tied for first in the 100 butterfly and placed second in the 100 breaststroke to advance to next Friday’s Division I Northeast District Swimming Championships at Cleveland State University.

First- and second-place finishers qualify for regionals.

Boardman senior Alex Downie placed second in the 100 backstroke to advance. The Spartans’ 200 medley relay and Warren Harding’s 200 freestyle relay also advanced with a second-place finishes.

Bailey tied for first in the 100 butterfly with North Canton Hoover’s Mitch Alters. Both swimmers posted times of 51.44 in the event. Bailey’s second-place time in the 100 breaststroke was 1:01.84.

Downie had a career best time of 55.11 in the 100 backstroke in his second place finish. Bailey and Downie teamed with senior Alec Santamas and junior Nick Barone to place second in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:42.61.

Warren Harding’s team of William Zackary, Kieran Hernon, Dylan Thirion, and Vaughn Deuban posted a second-place time of 1:30.28 in the 200 freestyle relay to automatically advance to the district championships.

North Canton Hoover placed first as a team with 394.5 points. Warren Harding finished fourth with 194 while Boardman was seventh with 151 points.

Division II

Canfield won the sectional meet with 395 points. Walsh Jesuit was second with 377.5 points.

Of the other 12 teams competing, Hubbard was ninth with 71 and Cardinal Mooney was 13th with 53.

Canfield’s Daniel Bogen won the 200 free (1:47.76) and 100 free (48.94). He also was a meber of Canfield’s first-place relay team in the 200 free and 400 free.

Nicky Monpalto and Mark Dalvin also were on those teams. Connor Brady was on the 200 team and Mike DiDomenico was on the 400 squad.

Canfield’s medley relay team (Brady, DiDomenico, Adam Weiss and Jake Smith) finished second.

Brady was second in the 100 fly and 100 back races while Drew Bennett was second in 500 free. Monpalto was second in the 100 free.

Mooney’s Joe Boniface set a meet record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.57. Boniface also won the 100 backstroke (54.67).

Ursuline’s John Tomko won the 500 freestyle.
