POLICE CALLS
A summary of recent criminal activity in Poland and Boardman townships:
POLAND
Jan. 31
Burglary: To a residence in the 6500 block of James Street. Thirty feet of copper piping was removed from the basement.
Feb. 2
Arrest: A traffic stop near Kennedy and Struthers roads resulted in the arrest of 51-year-old Kevin J. Horvath, 31 Elm St., Struthers, on a warrant from Campbell. He also was cited on a charge of driving under suspension.
BOARDMAN
Feb. 2
Theft/vandalism: Someone did more than $3,200 to a vehicle in the 7000 block of West Boulevard, then stole the rear license plate.
Menacing: An employee with Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive, reported receiving threatening messages.
Theft: A man in his late 20s stole a $260, five-piece tool kit from Sears in the Southern Park Mall.
Theft by deception: An elderly Lemoyne Avenue woman told police she sent $2,000 to someone in Mexico City who claimed her grandson had been arrested on a drug charge in Canada. The woman was preparing to send additional money but was warned it was a scam, a report showed.
Criminal mischief: A rear wall to a West Boulevard structure was spray-painted.
Criminal mischief: Someone in the 400 block of Boardman-Poland Road threw trash and popcorn on a truck.
Domestic violence: Edward W. Phelan, 33, of 5435 Southern Blvd., Boardman, was charged with the crime after his father alleged Phelan had placed him in a choke hold when the accuser confronted him about the younger Phelan’s drinking problem.
Drugs: Police stopped a vehicle on Market Street and took into custody Irene E. Adkins, 43, of 372 E. Philadelphia Ave., Youngstown, and Kevin P. Gipson, 49, of 7109 Market St., Boardman, both of whom were wanted on warrants from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Adkins and Gipson were charged with possession of dangerous drugs and conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance, respectively.
Arrests: Michael R. Vranches, 31, and Michael J. Vranches, 55, both of 1565 Sequoya Drive, Poland, faced felony charges of deception to obtain a dangerous drug after having been accused of submitting false prescriptions at various township pharmacies to obtain oxycodone.
Domestic violence: Police charged 30-year-old Tramaine Jackson, who listed addresses in Boardman and Grand Rapids, Mich., with the crime after a Lemans Drive woman alleged that during an argument, Jackson raised the accuser off her feet by her throat.
Unauthorized use of a vehicle: Latonya D. Craft, 19, of Mansfield, was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle after a Pierce Drive man said he had loaned his 2000 Chevrolet Impala to a friend who failed to return it.
Theft: A man in his 20s stole a $3,975 diamond engagement ring from Direct Jewelry Outlet, 1235 Boardman-Canfield Road, and fled.
Feb. 3
Menacing: A Boardman High School student reported being threatened and harassed at school.
Theft: A vehicle check in the 4100 block of Market Street led to 44-year-old Barbara J. Mhawesh’s arrest. Mhawesh, of 1139 Park Hill Drive, Youngstown, was wanted by Columbiana County authorities on a felony-theft count.
Identity fraud: A Sharon Drive woman found out her information had been used online to secure car loans at several dealerships.
Drug paraphernalia: A township boy, 16, was charged, accused during a traffic stop of having a device used to grind marijuana.
Theft: A car safety seat was among property taken from a vehicle in the 100 block of Lemans Drive.
Feb. 4
Theft by deception: A Sugartree Drive man told police a caller from Goyer, Ga., claimed the accuser would be arrested if he failed to pay a $507.50 past-due loan that he had never taken out.
Theft: Two hubcaps were stolen off a car in the 900 block of Larkridge Avenue.
Drugs: Officers investigating a vehicular accident on Market Street cited 21-year-old Steven P. Bowles, 280 W. Main St., Washingtonville, after saying they found a bag with a small quantity of suspected marijuana and a metal pipe with suspected marijuana residue.
Arrest: Jeremy C. Bell, 25, of 5265 Trotter Drive, Boardman, was picked up on Market Street. Bell was wanted on a warrant accusing him of failing to appear in court to face a breaking-and-entering charge.
Criminal damaging: Someone drove over a lawn in the 6100 block of Youngstown-Poland Road and damaged landscaping lights and bricks.
Criminal damaging: A vehicle left tire ruts in a front yard in the 7400 block of Sierra Madre Trail.
Burglary: Someone removed an air-conditioning unit from a rear window before entering a home in the 100 block of Forest Park Drive. Stolen was $27,000 as well as various coins, pieces of jewelry and medications.
Theft: The rear license plate was removed from a car in the 7100 block of Locust Avenue.
Possible theft: A Forest Ridge Drive woman told police she never received a tenant’s $400 rent payment and surmised the money may have been stolen from her mailbox.
Feb. 5
Assault: A woman at a Southern Park Mall store said a man made unwanted physical contact with her during an argument.
Fraud: A Spartan Drive woman reported a caller from Jamaica claimed she had won $4.5 million.
Burglary: Took place in the 20 block of Indianola Road, where 275 feet of copper piping was removed.
Theft: A man stole merchandise from Family Dollar, 4030 Market St.
Theft: Police at the Mahoning County jail booked 24-year-old Joseph F. Feret, 13 Midwood Circle, Boardman, on a theft charge. Feret was accused of stealing two 250-pound shipping racks from Shapes Unlimited, 590 E. Western Reserve Road.
Feb. 6
Harassment: An Arlene Avenue man said he received three in the latest series of such calls.
Criminal damaging: A vehicle in the 1300 block of Doral Drive was found with a broken driver’s-side window and dents in a door.
Theft of services: A man without permission placed a bag of garbage in a trash bin belonging to a business in the 7400 block of Market Street.
Criminal damaging: Someone in the 300 block of Mathews Road used a key to do $300 in damage to a vehicle’s passenger-side door.
Criminal damaging: Roughly 1,000 square feet of property in the 7200 block of South Avenue was damaged, apparently by off-road vehicles.
Damage: A car in the 6600 block of South Avenue was found with damage to its steering column, apparently done by someone who tried to steal the vehicle.
Theft: A steel sewer grate was taken from an area near Walgreen’s Pharmacy, 525 E. Midlothian Blvd.
Criminal damaging: A window was broken at a home in the 100 block of Shadyside Drive.
Burglary: Police charged 24-year-old Erik A. Carlson, 7393 South Ave., Boardman, with burglary after a family member alleged Carlson was in her Sheridan Road residence when she returned and refused to leave.
Domestic violence: Craig M. Ansevin of Parkwood Avenue, Youngstown, was charged with the crime after his father, of Boardman, alleged Ansevin punched his face at least three times, causing him to fall.
Felonious assault: Authorities responded to a domestic situation on Hillman Way, then charged Jasmine R. Howell, 22, of 4250 Hillman, with felonious assault, and Vanets Jones III, 27, same address, with domestic violence. Howell alleged Jones choked her during an argument; Jones alleged Howell struck or stabbed him with a screwdriver, an allegation she denied.
Feb. 7
Theft: A woman reported her purse stolen while at a business in the 600 block of Boardman-Canfield Road.
