The Youngstown Phantoms Pee Wee hockey team kept its winning streak alive with a 5-0 shutout victory over the Southpointe Rink Rats last Saturday at the Ice Zone in Boardman.

The game was played by two very even squads for the first two periods which ended with the score tied at 0-0. Defensive play by Maguire Franko (Poland) and Keith Smith (Austintown) helped keep Southpointe away from the goal.

The third period started with the game scoreless until 9:34 left when Devin Whitaker (Boardman) took a pass from Dominic Joseph (Canfield) and backhanded a shot over the goalie’s shoulder for a 1-0 lead.

This opened the flood gates.

At 8:11, Nick Frantz (St. Charles) scored unassisted to pad the Phantoms lead to 2-0. Youngstown kept rolling at 5:55, when Whitaker scored off another assist from Joseph. Colin Faloon (Austintown) got in the scoring column at the 4:34 mark, assisted by Danny Beistel (Canfield) and Trey Imhoff (St. Charles) for a 4-0 advantage.

Whitaker finished the scoring with his hat trick goal at 3:25 left. He was assisted by Justin Long (Brookfield).

Goalie Colin Frost (Boardman) faced 16 shots on goal as he recorded his third shutout of the season.

The Phantoms will play four games this weekend at the Ice Zone.
