Mahoning deputy on unpaid leave applies for disability retirement

YOUNGSTOWN — A longtime Mahoning County sheriff’s deputy is on unpaid leave pending his application for disability retirement.

Deputy Jeffrey T. Arnaut, who was hired by the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office in April 2000, went on unpaid leave two weeks ago. He had been most recently assigned to county jail duty, Sheriff Randall Wellington said.

Arnaut was the subject of a sheriff’s office disciplinary proceeding because of unsubstantiated admissions he made while applying last fall for a full-time job as a Youngstown State University police officer.
